Depression, the Chameleon, Often Needs Unconventional Treatment

...Can you imagine feeling better after a lifetime of depression?

Depression is a complex diagnosis that doesn't manifest uniformly; it's almost like a chameleon. While many associate it with sadness, tears, and despair, it can present differently—restless sleep, difficulty concentrating, lack of motivation, or losing interest in once-enjoyed activities. Recognizing the varied faces of depression is the first step in aiding and advocating for those who might struggle silently. Some individuals are aware of their depression but hesitant to share, while others may feel life is not worth living.

In addressing depression, especially treatment-resistant cases, the challenge lies in finding effective solutions. Standard medication often falls short, with a significant percentage not achieving the desired outcome. Traditional therapy remains a viable option, but exploring alternatives that may even seem unconventional is crucial. This is where Creative Wellness TMS comes in… we look at every patient through a different lens; we know by the time you come to see us you’ve tried multiple medications, you’ve tried talk therapy, and we know you’re emotionally exhausted. There are other things out there….

Genetic testing has transformed the landscape of medication management. Individualized medication selection uses your unique genetic profile to guide treatment decisions—offering valuable insights for more effective, personalized care, especially in cases of treatment-resistant depression. While this approach holds promise, individual medication responses can still vary widely. However, it brings us closer to a more effective and appropriate treatment plan earlier in our mental wellness journey than ever before.

Beyond medication, alternatives like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) provide a non-invasive method to stimulate the natural function of the brain’s neurotransmitters especially in the specific areas of the brain that control mood. When we experience depression, the synapses in those mood-regulating areas are underactive and connections are broken.  TMS revitalizes those dormant synapses, “waking up” the brain to function as it was meant to function. This treatment changes lives.  TMS is an FDA-approved therapy, that can be used in conjunction with medication without medication.  There is an impressive two-thirds remission rate after a single course of 36-treatments. Imagine feeling better after a lifetime of depression…

Spravato, nasal eketamine, has also entered into the mental health arena. It is a unique antidepressant that targets the NMDA receptors. In addition to balancing the neurotransmitter glutamate, the key component, esketamine, is recognized for rebuilding synapses – or connections – between brain cells similar to TMS.  This provides a much faster result, often within days rather than weeks.  Can you imagine starting to feel better sooner?

There are many alternatives to traditional medications.  We would love to introduce these options to you. Schedule an appointment with us today for the next step in your journey toward a healthier, HAPPIER you.
